Landed Estates
We bring your business and landscape together
Our unique blend of skills and expertise positions us as trusted advisors to landed estates. Assessments for these estates require a tailored approach, drawing on a range of methods to measure, analyse and take action on the emissions across your entire organisation.

Our landed estate project team brings together specialists from our carbon accounting team with our landscape assessment team. They work to deliver a fully integrated and holistic approach to mapping and managing the emissions from the whole estate. Drawing on our expertise, we recognise the importance of each estate’s unique history, heritage, and reputation, while equipping it with the tools and insights needed to navigate an ever-changing environment.

Landed estates often encompass a complex mix of elements, including stately homes, private residences, commercial buildings, tenant properties, hospitality and visitor-related emissions alongside farmland, conservation areas and diverse landscapes.

All these areas must be seamlessly integrated into a comprehensive assessment that identifies emission hotspots and targeted actions for decarbonisation. Opportunities to uncover improved land management strategies and the potential for incoming investment from carbon and nature credit markets are also important elements to consider.

Buildings
Stately homes, private residencies, commercial buildings, tenant properties, hotels, holiday cottages and visitor accommodation - our carbon assessment will map the emissions of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from all your different types of buildings and their operations, whilst being responsive to the differences between them.

Hospitality and visitors
Visitors' emissions require an understanding of how visitors travel to venues, the activities they partake in and what they consume whilst they're there.
We incorporate these emissions into the relevant scopes of your total estate footprint, but with specific targets and action plans for your hospitality and events team to engage with.

Farming and landscapes
Your farmland, conservation areas, woodlands and wider landscapes will be assessed for their emissions and mapped for the opportunities they present for climate mitigation and nature recovery.
We work with specialist partners to assess your estate for carbon and biodiversity credits, at a time when UK landowners have a growing reputation as reliable and high-standard providers to investors .
Land use, farming and woodlands

We use our proprietary Landscape Carbon Tracker along with our Opportunity Mapping tools to assess woodlands, peatlands and opportunities for regenerative agriculture.
Working with you, we adjust our calculations to reflect your estate’s priorities and funding streams, from a focus on flood defence or joining up fragmented habitats, to funding for hedgerow or woodland creation. This approach allows you to identify the optimal use for every small packet of land down to 10 square metres.
We help you set science-based targets for land use emissions and give you an online tool to track your progress. You can view the data in different ways to reflect your preferred approach for breaking down your carbon reduction strategy, aligning with how your teams operate across different areas of your business.

Business supply chain carbon footprinting

Our organisational footprinting uses our world-leading proprietary datasets, comprising of multi-regional input-output data. It provides a view of total supply chain emissions, using data for 103 different industries across 75 countries to give the most reliable carbon footprint of your global supply chain.

You will have the reassurance of working with supply chain experts trusted by the likes of BT Group, NatWest and Sage. Using both spend-based data and product life cycle data, our carbon accounting gives you confidence that your emissions reporting reflects the best estimate of your emissions.

Big Picture thinking

Landed estates may have the same short-term business pressures as other organisations, but we recognise they have a more personal legacy to build on, and a future that must balance tradition with innovation.

Our Big Picture Assessment can help you think about your wider impact on the environment and the communities around you. We show you what it would look like to be an exemplar in those areas and the steps you can take to get there.
Your sustainability story

Every estate has a unique history, a personal story of its ancestry and those past visions that created the estate as it stands today. And every estate’s story is evolving, continuing the custodianship of the land and its communities, whilst creating a sustainable future for generations to come in a rapidly changing world.

We would love to help you tell the next chapter of the story for your estate. Working with Small World Consulting gives you the confidence to talk about your ambitions, your actions and your impact with integrity.
We help you uphold your reputation, avoid greenwashing and greenhushing and speak with the authority of working with world-leading experts. We help communicate your sustainability story, allowing you to amplify your influence and create an even bigger impact by showing others what great sustainable practice looks and feels like.
